Elements of a Future Cost of Care Report -Part 6. Daily Living (medication and rehabilitation)

Life goes on, and adjusting to a disability and or impairment after a serious accident usually requires a daily routine of medication, therapy and the use of special equipment. Depending on the age and severity of the disability and impairment, medication, treatment and special equipment required will need to be addressed in a future costs care report.

Consideration
• What services, equipment can be supported by the evidence?
• Is the person already using the proposed service, equipment , etc
• Can the person undertake any recreational activities. If so, what equipment is necessary?

Witnesses
• Rehabilitation Expert, Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist,
Physiotherapist, Physician

Documentation/ demonstrative evidence
• Schedule of medications, purpose and cost.
• Schedule of therapy services presently used and cost.
• Schedule of equipment (i.e. hospital bed special clothing) and the cost.

Contingencies
1. Future Hospitalization

Consideration
• is likelihood of future hospitalization so great as to call for a10-20% deduction in at home future care costs?

Witnesses
• Physician

Documentation/ demonstrative evidence
Schedule for persons hospital admission and medical appointments since obtaining disability.

2. Government Assistance

Consideration
• What is the certainty of government assistance into the future? should a deduction be made to account for such assistance?

Witnesses
• Individuals who have had benefits terminated post-judgment, representative of relevant advocacy group on historical uncertainty of funding

Documentation/ demonstrative evidence
• Schedule of assistance to date- has it decreased?
